A group of our 15 tech-passionate students recently embarked on a transformative journey to Shanghai, participating in the "HKU Shanghai 2026 × Future Forum: Science, AI, and Entrepreneurship Frontier Experience Camp" offered by the HKU Summer Institute. This immersive eight-day study tour was designed to provide secondary students with an unparalleled opportunity to explore the frontiers of scientific innovation and business entrepreneurship in Shanghai - one of China's most dynamic cities and hub of elites in Yangtze River Delta. The programme offered a rich, hands-on curriculum that blended academic learning with real-world exposure. Students delved into cutting-edge topics like Artificial Intelligence and Cosmology, visited the renowned Li Zhengdao Institute to learn about dark matter research, and gained a firsthand look at China's advanced manufacturing prowess with a tour of the C919 passenger jet model. A key highlight was the intensive Hackathon, where students collaborated in teams to develop innovative, AI-driven solutions to contemporary challenges. Guided by HKU professors and industry mentors, they experienced the entire entrepreneurial process—from ideation and creating a business model to pitching their final projects. This challenge sharpened their critical thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities. Beyond the classroom, the tour included corporate visits to industry leaders like Bilibili and attendance at the Future Science Forum, broadening their understanding of the tech landscape. Cultural excursions to The Bund and Chenghuang Temple provided a deeper appreciation for Shanghai’s rich heritage. It also gave them the opportunity to meet students from other areas and make new friends. Our students returned not only with valuable knowledge but also with a renewed passion for science and a sharper entrepreneurial mindset, ready to become the next generation of innovators and leaders.
