The Visual Arts Department organised a visit to the Hong Kong Heritage Museum for all S5
students on 10 Nov 2022. The exhibition of “Dunhuang: Enchanting Tales for Millennium"
showcased artefacts, mural paintings, the reproduction of paintings in silk and a replica of
Yulin Cave 25. They experienced a fusion of ancient relics and modern technology,
including rare terracotta figures, paintings and the craftsmanship of ceramics and bronze
with Dunhuang digital animations projected on the screens and walls. They learnt a lot
about the characteristics of Dunhuang art, particularly the symbolic meanings of the images
in religion, culture and the moral standard of filial piety. To consolidate what they learnt
during the visit, an online quiz game was held. The Top 10 highest-scoring students were
awarded prizes.
After visiting the exhibition, the VADSE students stayed and made sketches of the
surroundings of the museum. Most of them experienced outdoor sketching for the first time.
They drew people playing chess. It was quite challenging for them to draw people who
moved around, changed their poses and even went away. However, they overcame the
difficulties by observation and memory. They finally finished some sketches of the everyday
life of people and the trunks and roots of trees with pencils and markers.
