The Visual Arts Department organised a visit to the Hong Kong Heritage
Museum for all S4 students on 18 Nov 2022. In the “Dunhuang: Enchanting
Tales for Millennium" exhibition, the students learned about the sculptures of
people of different occupations in ancient times such as musicians and priests.
The themes of the murals were mainly about Buddhism, such as the Sakyamuni
punishing bad people and different images of Avalokitesvara. Some students
were surprised to find that certain images of Avalokitesvara were male.
After the visit, the VADSE students stayed and took part in a sketching activity.
They learnt how to express the colours of the scene in a more specific way,
such as applying brick red, orange red and brown red to draw the walls. They
also made sketches of people playing Chinese Chess. The quick capture and
memory of the human posture and gestures were quite challenging for them.
They also learned the tips of drawing the trunks of trees by first observing the
form of growth, finding the main root and trunks, then drawing the details of texture or shading.
